The Shape of Chicago: John Massey's 1968 Banners Revisited

In 1968, John Massey, UIC Design Professor Emeritus, designed a series of striking banners with bright colors and geometric shapes for Chicago's Michigan Avenue. Today, marking the 50th anniversary of this remarkable public design project, the banners have been reproduced for exhibition on State Street.

Chicago Design Museum is hosting an opening event on Thursday, August 2, with exhibition partners Chicago Loop Alliance and the Terra Foundation for American Art. The banners will be on display along State Street from Wacker Drive to Van Buren Street from August 1 — August 31, 2018.

The launch event will include a short screening of a never-before-seen interview with UIC Design Professor John Massey.
