Undergraduate Foundation Review

Greetings Students!

Please do not sign up for an interview slot until you have read through all the info on the pages in this section.

Below you will find links to instructions for the online foundation review.

This is a lot of information, so we ask that you read through everything at least once thoroughly before taking any action. Please go through everything on this page before reviewing the specific instructions linked from the menu to the right.

There are two parts to the Foundation Review:

PART 1: PORTFOLIO and WRITTEN STATEMENT
The portfolio requirements and written statement will be submitted via the SlideRoom website.

  • The deadline for submitting your portfolio materials is April 28th at 5:00 PM CDT/Chicago time.

PART 2: THE LIVE INTERVIEW
Interviews will take place via Zoom between 10 AM and 5 PM on April 29th. Zoom links will be mailed out closer to the interview date and added to the corresponding sign-up sheet.

  • You may start signing up for interviews on April 11th. The deadline for signing up for an interview is April 22nd at 5 PM CDT/US Chicago time.

  • If you plan to interview for Design Studies and a BDes program, you should sign up ASAP and choose your Design Studies interview slot first, as the time options are limited.

  • You may not change your interview appointment once you've selected a time.

SUBMITTING YOUR PORTFOLIO AND SIGNING UP FOR AN INTERVIEW
You may submit for more than one review if you are still unsure which major you prefer or if you are interested in the BDes Graphic/Industrial Design double major option. If you wish to try for more than one major, you must complete the entire submission/interview process for each major. After reading through this page, please refer to the links on the right for additional information.

INTERVIEW ATTIRE + PRESENTATION
Wear what you feel best represents you. You can dress sharp, comfortably, practically - there are no complex rules. Many students take this as an opportunity to dress formally or more polished than usual. So long as you choose something that gives a good impression of yourself, it's hard to go wrong.

If you cannot set up for your interview in a room with a neutral background, you may want to consider using a generic background image.

QUESTIONS/ASSISTANCE
The Design Foundation Mentors will be holding info sessions during the week of April 18th through the 22md.  This will be an opportunity to ask questions and view/participate in a mock portfolio review. Additionally, the mentors will make themselves available on the School of Design Discord Server during the week leading up to the reviews if anyone has last-minute portfolio-related questions, needs technical assistance with SlideRoom, or is having difficulty accessing their interview.

If you need access to the School of Design Discord Server, please contact Kevin Strickland.

FOUNDATION REVIEW RESULTS
Results and information about registering for second-year classes will be emailed out one to two weeks after the review.

STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FOUNDATION REVIEW
Please make an appointment with Elizabeth Salvi in iAdvise to discuss your future academic plans.

You may want to consider the BA in Interdisciplinary Education in the Arts (IDEAS) program. This degree can still be completed in 4 years and allows students to take courses in all the areas in CADA: Design, Art, Art History, Architecture, Theater, and Music. If you are interested in the IDEAS major, please send an email with your full name, your UIN, and your availability to Amanda Grant, the academic advisor for Art+Art History.
