East Meets West :: Designing Medical Products

East Meets West is a collaboration of Provost Susan Poser and Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs Robert Barish.

The UIC course known as Bio-IPD brings together faculty and students from UIC's East and West campuses. Meeting in the UIC Innovation Center, the departmemts of Industrial Design, Bio-Engineering, and Business Marketing work collaboratively to develop new medical products.

UIC Industrial Design student, Daniel Helm, is still has a few weeks before he graduates, but he’s already had a taste of real-world workplace interactions. Helm is among more than 30 students working together — and learning from each other — to solve complex medical problems in a two-semester course, Interdisciplinary Product Development (IPD). “It’s really great to get that team-based type of environment right before going into the workforce because that’s what you’re going to be dealing with your entire life,” said Helm.
