Risograph Residency Book Launch & Exhibition
Each summer, the UIC School of Design Risograph Residency invites one Design faculty member and one Design student to produce new work utilizing the Print Lab’s Risograph duplicator. This semester, the Open Archive showcased art books, publications, prints, and paper sculptures by this year’s residents, faculty member Grace Spee and student Katon Black. Hosted by the UIC Print Lab and the Open Archive, the School of Design community came together to celebrate self-publishing, risography, and book arts.
Katon delved deep into the analog, creating vibrant multi-layered collage posters useing reclaimed books from the Open Archive. He also honored his daily sketchbook practice by making a full size recreation of his teal blue Moleskin notebook, rendering each pencil & pen drawn spread in copper RISO ink.
Grace continued her research uniting digital media and analogue production, this time examining feminist narrative in survival horror video games. She produced an array of beautifully printed artist books, including a set of posters, a fourteen-foot-long accordion fold book, an intricate lotus fold publication, and life-sized paper doll.
Congratulations again to Grace and Katon!
